In the battle of
Mogadishu every civilian that was loyal to General Aidid and his cause fought
for him. Men, women, and even children were all a part of the Somali militia.
No one would ever expect a women let alone a child to pick up a gun and fire back at
them. Could you bring yourself to kill a child in this situation? In the movie
Black
Hawk Down, SGT. Urich travels through a family’s home and slips
out the back window to avoid a mob. When he slipped out the window, he startled
the little boy soldier and the boy shot his father by accident. SGT. Urich did not kill
the child; he could not bring himself to do it. Should he have killed the child
or did he make the right choice? Personally, I think that he should have shot the child.
It is my belief that no
child should ever be exposed to wars and battles like those held in Mogadishu. Instead,
they should be playing, laughing, having fun, and not fighting in a battle. I think children are just entirely too young
to be put in a battle. This was wrong for the militia to do but, I understand why
it was done. These children followed their parents who supported General
Aidid’s cause and so they fought alongside their parents. Did they know that the
decision they were making was right? Maybe, maybe not, but they made the
decision based off what they believed to be right. They did not know any better,
and decided based off what they were taught.
As for me, if I came
faced with a situation like this I would have to take the child’s life,
although I would regret it for the rest of my life. However, as soon as that
child picked up the weapon they became my enemy. I am not going to lie, I would
have to wrestle with that decision for a moment but when push comes to shove, its either my
life or theirs. I know it would be an extremely hard and long process to
forgive yourself after committing such an act but you have to go on living. I
interviewed my world history teacher Dawn Diver who is a former soldier. She stated that, “A child came to the base with a bomb strapped to himself. I chose to
kill the child because it was either the child or everyone in the base.” To
this day, she still thinks about that child and the choice she made.
I know many people
would not be able to pull the trigger in a situation like this. They just would
not have it in them to take a child’s life no matter the circumstances. They
couldn’t live with the guilt, regret, and pain of the aftermath.
I totally agree that no child should be exposed to things that they were exposed to in Blackhawk Down. However, I do believe the soldier made the right choice in not killing the child. If the child would have had been shooting at him, then he could have killed him. In this situation, the child has no intention of killing anyone, he is worried about his father. If the child would have been shooting at the soldier, I believe it would have been okay to kill him, However, he was not shooting at the child, so I believe he made the right decision in not killing him.
ReplyDeleteYou make a great point Alana. As soon as the child noticed what happened, he dropped the gun and no longer became a threat to the soldier. The child only started shooting because he was startled.
DeleteI also agree, it would be really hard to kill a child and something that would be stuck in most people's head for the rest of their life. In that situation i can't say exactly what i would do unless i was truly face to face with a child holding a gun. If i were a child in Mogadishu though and i had the same relationship i do with my parents now; i would probably fight along side them. When i was a kid i would try and do anything to impress or make my parents happy.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure if I agree with Alana. Yes, the child shot because he was startled, but startled or not the child was trying to kill Urich. We know what happened after he shot his father, but what if you were in Urich position and you walked out a door and a child opened fire on you? I'm shooting him! He was trying to kill him and if I was Urich, I would immediately recognize him as a threat. That's just my opinion though.
ReplyDeleteI recently read a blog post similar to this one, and agree with this completely. If I was faced with a decision as such, I would probably shoot the child. If he/she is armed and aiming the weapon directly at me. what am I suppose to do? let the child shoot me? It would be a very tough decision but that child became my enemy as soon as the weapon was pointed towards.
ReplyDeleteI do agree that children should not be exposed to war and these situations, but it is the culture they live in. The children grew up preparing for the war. I agree with Alana that the soldier made the right decision in not shooting the child, but Chance also makes a good point that the child could be a threat and could have easily killed Urich. Soldiers only have a spilt second to make such a difficult choice when it comes to children. In this case, Urich made the right choice, but it could have easily backfired on him.
ReplyDeleteYou all make great points towards your arguments. Thank you for commenting on my blog and I hope we can have more discussions like this in the future.
